23andMe User Data Stolen
On October 6, 2023, the genetics testing giant 23andMe confirmed a trove of user data had been stolen from its website, including names, years of birth, and general descriptions of genetic data. The data related to hundreds of thousands of users of Chinese descent and primarily targeted Ashkenazi Jews.
A hacker claiming to have stolen the data posted more than 4 million records for sale on the platform BreachForums, a known cybercrime forum. The hacker responsible for the data breach claims that the
data breach contained 1 million data points exclusively about Ashkenazi Jewish People. There also may be hundreds of thousands of users of Chinese descent impacted by the leak as well. The hackers also began selling what they claimed were 23andMe profiles for between $1 and $10 per account depending on the scale of the purchase.
The types of information that were reported to have been stolen include items such as display name, sex, birth year, and some details about genetic ancestry results, such as if someone is of “broadly European” or “broadly Arabian” descent. The data stolen in the data breach may also include more specific geographic ancestry information.
If you received an email or mailed notice from 23andMe about the data breach, you may be eligible for compensation.
